Hey guys!

Today we left Athens and took an hour and a half ride northwest to Delphi – an historical site on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Although Delphi doesn’t have any biblical stories or events mentioning it, it’s still important to take in and understand why it was so important.

Again, it would take too long to go into everything that Delphi holds (but if you’re really interested in Delphi, you can read up on it here). Something interesting is that the ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the “navel” of the world – in other words, the centre of the world. The temples, idols, and other sites were considered to be very powerful and influential in regards to pagan activities. Below are some photos of the sites and sculptures.

I should say that Dr. John gave an excellent talk during the ancient Delphi excursion, and he said something that we so very badly need to hear again and again today. I’m paraphrasing, but he said that today we need more objective foundational truths about God and the gospel, more than subjective personal experiences. So many pagan stories of mythical creatures and things are all subjective or even from a personal revelation. Dr. John mentioned that the apostles in the New Testament were not given “personal revelations,” but Jesus Himself spoke to them, and the Holy Spirit carried them along as they wrote the gospels and the of rest of the New Testament.

Personal experience isn’t wrong, in fact, it should undoubtedly come! But it must be birthed from an objective foundational truth of God from His Word.

On the other hand, the modern city of Delphi (just 15 minutes away from the historical site) is beautiful. The photo below doesn’t give it justice. It’s a seemingly perfect little village on the side of a mountain. By the way, did you know that mountains make up 80% of Greece? I hadn’t a clue! But as we’ve been driving around (especially today), it’s been more and more evident.

We’re now in a fabulous hotel on the slopes next to the city, overlooking valleys. We’re only spending a night here, so we have to soak as much as we can in! The Wiebe’s blessed us tonight with some great music, and Phil Callaway gave a great presentation (as he always does!).

By the way, as a side note, I love watching people laugh. Over the many times I’ve seen Phil give presentations, this is what I’ve noticed with people when they laugh. It always occurs in 3 steps: 1) they burst into laughter, 2) they lean forward, and 3) they look around at people as if to say, “Wasn’t that funny?!” I always get a chuckle watching those 3 steps.

Anyways, off to bed! Tomorrow we leave Delphi and head to Thessaloniki (or, ancient Thessalonica).

See ya tomorrow!
