Entrust Your Life to a Consistent God

Why Trust God?

“…if we are faithless, he remains faithful – for he cannot deny himself.” – 2 Timothy 2:13

I love this verse. It’s encouraging to affirm the truth that we worship a faithful God who cannot (literally, is unable to) deny Himself. What this means is that He cannot do anything against His character. He’s true to Himself. If you struggle with the question “Why trust in God?” this is a great place to look.

Our God is consistent.

In the Bible we learn a ton about the character of God. We learn that He’s creative, loving, merciful, gracious, compassionate, wise, integral, generous, and the list goes on. As hard as it is to fathom, God is always consistent in matching His character with His behaviour.

The Inconsistency of Humanity

Unfortunately, we don’t have this ability. It’s not that our characteristics don’t match our behaviours, but that our characteristics aren’t consistent. We may say with our mouths that we’re loving, gracious, and kind people, but anyone who was honest with him/herself would quickly lower their head and say, “Well, not always.”

Some days we elevate mercy, other days justice. Some days love, others hate. Depending on the situation at hand, our emphasis will change.

But, our God is consistent. He doesn’t teeter-totter back and forth between love and hate, mercy and justice, or truth and grace depending on various events. He’s consistently faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

The Cross as our Example of Consistency

To see God’s consistency applied, look at the cross. Look at the physical and spiritual realities of Jesus’s crucifixion. There, as Jesus hung in humiliating anguish, the peak of God’s infinite love met the height of His infinite justice.

Because of God’s consistent justice, He’s unable to bypass the evil in the world. And because of God’s consistent mercy, He’s unable to bypass a way of salvation.

Jesus, hanging on the cross, bore our sin and paid the penalty owed. Through this dramatic and awful event, God displayed the height of His love with the integrity of His justice.

You might be asking, “Why trust God?” My answer would be: Our God is consistent. And it’s this very reason that I beckon you to trust in Him. Every worldview, religion, and human being is inconsistent. That means that trusting any one of those things with your life, values, and/or faith will undoubtedly end in disappointment and destruction.

Trust in the faithful, loving, just, and consistent God.
